Project background
Personal identity revolves around the goals and values that steer personal life decisions in the quest for an answer to the question “Who am I?” in different life domains (Erikson, 1968). It represents a core developmental task in adolescence (Meeus, 2011) and emerging adulthood (Schwartz, Zamboanga, Luyckx, Meca, & Ritchie, 2013). This task becomes more prominent and difficult to tackle in a post-modern context where young people are bombarded with tentative identities promoted by families, peer role models, and the media. Moreover, developmental transitions (e.g., school-to-school, school-to-work) require high levels of identity work, due to the challenge and strain posed by the social investment in and allegiance to new life roles (Lodi-Smith & Roberts, 2007).
