Effects of Parenting Perfectionism” is a 2-year postdoctoral research grant (2018-2020; PN-III-P1-1.1-PD-2016-1246; contract no. 86/ 2018) financed by the Executive Unit for Financing Higher Education, Research, Development and Innovation (UEFISCDI)  awarded to Lavinia E. Damian, PhD. and mentored by professor Oana Benga, PhD.

Project Summary

Perfectionism is a multidimensional personality disposition associated with psychological maladjustment. The present research will try to address the limitations of the literature and to overcome the identified difficulties by proposing a three-wave longitudinal study. The objective is to investigate longitudinal effects of parenting perfectionism in terms of: parenting subjective experience (parenting satisfaction, parenting stress), parental behaviors (autonomy support, responsiveness, behavioral control, psychological control), adolescent perfectionism (perfectionistic strivings, concerns, other-oriented perfectionism), adolescent emotional development (emotion regulation strategies: self-blaming, acceptance, rumination, positive refocusing, refocus on planning, positive reappraisal, putting into perspective, catastrophizing, and blaming others), and adolescent social development (quality of relationships with close friends: degree of mutual trust, quality of communication, and extent of anger and alienation). A sample of approximately 300 dyads of parents and their adolescent children attending 6th to 12th grade of public middle and high schools will be recruited for completing questionnaires three times over one year. The variables will be measured with instruments built on recent theoretical and methodological developments that operationalize different components of the constructs and thus allow for a multidimensional assessment. Data will be analyzed by means of advanced longitudinal data analyses. The deliverables will target two communities: scientists and practitioners. The scientific deliverables will consist of a minimum of three papers published in top 50% high impact journals and two international conference presentations. For practitioners, deliverables will consist of a practical guide and workshops on the applicability of the study findings, promoting research-based interventions targeting parenting perfectionism and parental behaviors.
